Sup Oppo, just wondering who here is an audio enthusiast as much as they are a car enthusiast.
I'll tell you my setup first, its definatley budget, but its setup to sound nice and clear. I'm going for SQ, not SPL.
HU and amplification:
JVC KD-R820BT w/ 24bit Burr Brown DAC, 2.5v pre out's (probably will replace with a nice SQ oriented Double DIN (if I can find one) or a Pioneer DEH-80PRS)
JVC Arsenal KS-AR7004 4 channel amp pushing 100W RMS at 4 ohms (really nice unit actually, definatley holding on to this)
Front:
Kenwood KFC 6983PS 6x9's (probably will replace with some nice 6.5 components, suggestions?)
Rear:
Kenwood KFC 6983PS 6x9's (will keep these, right now doing most of the bass but they will be just for rear fill when I get what's below)
Subwoofer(s):
This is what I'm in the market for right now. I listen to a wide variety of music, but I'm going for tight, clean, accurate bass rather than boomy. Was looking at the JL Audio CS210 WX-v2. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to chime in.

I'm recovered, don't really do much anymore. I'm not sure if my needs changed or were just met more easily by factory systems. Best was the 1000 watt system with built in subs in the 2011 Mustang GT I had. Great system.
More Power!!and also some brakes.

I downsized from 2 12" kicker comps to a single 12" L7 kicker solo-baric. I love it. I have trunk room now and plenty of kick when I want it and pretty good balance.

I love subwoofers. I used to have a box with two 12" Rockford Fosgate subs and an Alpine M500 amp in my last car, a '96 Saab 900S 3-door hatch.
I'm driving a 9-3 convertible now, so I gave the box to a friend since it wouldn't fit in my trunk. My sound sucks now :(

I always prefered seperate components over the stacked 2 and 3 way systems.

I used to be. My first Blazer had a Panasonic head unit, pioneer speakers all around (2x4s up front, 6x9s rear). These had 55w each. Then I had a dual audiobahn 10" bandpass setup with an 800w competition amp.
Totaled around 1000w system. Sold it with the truck (I miss both)
Now I have permanent hearing damage in my left ear and a stock system in my current car lol. I get my sound from my V8 in the Montego now and it's beautiful (As seen on oppo earlier: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/montego-gets-l… )

I do as well, but on my budget at the time, they we're the perfect deal (and don't get me wrong, they sound great too). But now, for the front stage, I'm looking for more accurate sound reproduction, and I know components are the way to go.

Go to the stereo shop and bring a cd with the music you intend to listen to. Try to listen to different sets. I like Image Dynamics personally.

Sweet Montego!
And I try not to crank my music up too loud (lately especially) which has really helped my hearing.
When I first installed the system, I was always blasting it, but I got used to the loudness... which muted my hearing once I was outside of the car. When not being in the car, or listening to it loud, for weeks on end, going back in, I kept it at a comfortable volume while still being satisfied, and my hearing did not suffer. I've been faithful to that threshold ever since.
Glad I didn't cause any permenant hearing damage to myself (that I know of) and also I've gained an appreciaton for SQ over SPL, which is probably keeping those sound levels lower in my car.

One of the critical parts of sound quality people seem to over look is the vehicle the equipment is in... which I didn't see listed. Pavarotti singing in a bathroom stall will sound no better than an amateur in an amphitheater, just louder. What are the acoustical liabilities you have to overcome with the vehicle and what have you done in that department?

Thanks!
It sounds like you have a nice system coming together and know your stuff. JL makes great speakers imo.
I had an amp "remote knob" I'm not sure if thats the proper term hooked up. It was great. See a cop coming? *TURN* subs are off or lowered. Pulling into a neighborhood at night? Same thing! Real convenient, I highly recommend them if you have a spot for them.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be investing in one of those knobs, just for pure convenience like that, and also, with the variety of music I listen too, I can tune the gain on the subs to suit (specifically talking about rap music of late which has been mastered by deaf monkeys who just boost the bass to 1,000,000).

I have the EXACT sub box pictured in the post with 2 10"s hooked up to a 300W Rockford Fosgate Punch amp. It makes enough bass noise for me. Other than that, 4 crappy ass Sony 6x9s and an Alpine deck. Also, I really need a capacitor since it kills my stereo if I turn it up too much. POWER DRAW.

Yep! Gives you great control over the sound at a moments notice, as opposed to digging through settings in the head unit.
Let us know how it turns out!

I used to be. Up until one day I woke up with a ringing in my ear that didn't go away for a few days.
I went through several setups in different cars. My most complex setup had all Kenwood components, the HU EQ (passive) and all 5 amps. Used Boston Acoustics for mids and highs in the dash and side panels ('83 S10 Blazer) and 5 subs (2x10", 2X12" and 1x15"). It sounded a little odd on the low end. Turns out running 10" and 12" subs in the same vehicle is a bad idea. The 10's moved just a tad bit quicker and created a strange echo sound on the low end.
I had my share of 1st, 2nd and 5th order band pass, ported and sealed enclosures. It was a lot of fun to play with the different configurations. Definitely learned a lot.
If you're looking for a tight and clean sound, go for a sub that is designed for a sealed enclosure. If I remember correctly, check the QTS, QWS and QMS to figure out what sub/enclosure works best. It's been a while so I don't remember the exact details of each measurement.
What kind of vehicle is this for? That makes a huge difference when it comes to picking the right enclosure. Once you know what the enclosure is, then you can start looking at subwoofer options. What sounds good in one environment doesn't always work for another.

Actually I just got out of the game. I sold my IS for something smaller and I'm trying to sell my 12" FI Q, with custom enclosure, 1500 Watt Audiopipe amp, and all the wiring (including 0 gauge to the battery). Its $400 obo if anyone in DFW (especially FW) is interested.... You will not be disappointed.

Is the Rockford a class D? I'll be looking at a Class D amp to avoid that power draw issue, as I already have a class A/B for my cabin speakers.

Class-A/B. But my truck's alternator is probably just dying out. Also, my battery is old as hell and doesn't hold a charge for more than half a week if not driven.

Yes, your name does suggest that. Guess I should have read a bit more.
IDK if the trunk area is sealed off from the cabin or not, but a sealed box is usually the better option in that scenario. Ported boxes don't sound good isolated in a trunk. You may have the option to run an infinite baffle or "free air" sub in the rear deck. But those don't handle power as well and usually don't sound as clean. They tend to sound hollow and not very deep.

Sort of. I just tinker now, but I'm not willing to install the sound deadening needed for a really nice setup.

I had a JL 12 in my car for about a year until the amp died. I was low on money so I thought I was cheaping out and bought a BOSS cx122 and BOSS AR1500 amp to go with it. Total budget build, and blows the JL I had out of the water for less than half the cost. I'm still stunned. A lot of people hate on BOSS, but it still sounds better than my JL, even if it really isn't pushing the power it states. A definite recommendation for BOSS from me.
